We're hiring a Chief of Staff at Gitpod.
As Chief of Staff, you'll be acting as the CEO's right hand and level-up how the company runs. You'll work directly with Johannes on top company priorities, quarterly planning, board meetings, and fundraising to help us grow faster. You'll create light-weight rituals for teams to work better together while measuring our progress. This is a high-intensity, fast-paced and high-information role - it is also very fun and you will learn a lot. Philipp, your predecessor, now COO, will share his unfiltered experience in the interview process.
Who we are
Five years ago, we set out to create a world where every software engineer is instantly ready-to-code. With over 1.5 million users, we are now the leading platform for standardized and automated development environments. In 2024, we quadrupled enterprise revenue, signed several seven-figure contracts with F500 companies, launched our AI-first product architecture and, most importantly, discovered our authentic rhythm. In 2025, we amp up our ambition.
We're a talent-dense group of people who transform how software is created, working to empower every company, every team, and every individual to succeed in a software-first world.
We care deeply, and for many of us, building Gitpod is our life's work.
This is the best time to join the company. We've found product-market-fit and are scaling with high intensity towards repeatable go-to-market fit. Our operating principles are an honest representation of how we build relationships and make decisions. We choose colleagues carefully based on merit and their authentic alignment with those principles. If this excites you, we would love for you to apply.
Role responsibilities
We hold our operating principles as the standard that we drive towards. Joining Gitpod means you have ownership around forming our culture by living out these principles and holding others accountable towards them.
In addition, here are the main areas of focus:
Right hand of CEO: Work directly with CEO on company priorities. Connect the dots across functions and surface context for informed decision-making.
Rituals: Collaborate closely on annual planning and our financial model, business reviews and own our goal setting process.
Organizational effectiveness: Create systems for better teamwork and faster decisions. Build lightweight processes that help teams work efficiently while maintaining speed.
Fundraising support & board management: Lead preparation of board materials, data room, and fundraising collateral. Develop metrics and narratives that effectively communicate our growth story and strategic vision.
Special projects: Lead important projects that help the company grow. Find and fix operational problems. Set clear goals and own projects from start to finish.
At the end of your first 30 days, you will have:
Delivered a comprehensive business risk & challenges presentation to the leadership team, demonstrating mastery of our financial model, key metrics, and strategic priorities.
Iterated on CEO and leadership meeting cadence, optimizing for 5-star meetings.
Created a unified Gitpod Cockpit that tracks our top company metrics, automated where possible.
Completed a full audit of current processes and presented 3-5 specific recommendations for operational improvements.
Established rapport with all of leadership and documented their key priorities and challenges.
Iterated on a streamlined system for board updates and quarterly business reviews. The goal for board meeting preparation is to take less than half a day.
You’ve created first agents through Lindy.ai that increase CEO effectiveness and efficiency.
About you
You work in alignment with our operating principles. Our operating principles unite everybody at Gitpod to make grounded, high-quality decisions in uncharted territory. We hold them high, evolve them as we evolve, and integrate them into everything we do. We expect everyone at Gitpod to actively use the principles as the playbook for how they make decisions and build relationships.
You take initiative. You spot and solve problems before others notice them. You move easily between strategy and execution, linking daily work to company priorities. Where others see chaos, you create order. You act on your own, driven by understanding of the business and clear thinking.
Designing simple solutions. You create elegant, lightweight solutions to complex problems. You build efficient systems that can grow with the business. You constantly simplify processes, knowing that good design removes complexity rather than adds to it.
Making data-driven decisions. You use financial models to guide decisions. Your analyses range from quick calculations to detailed business scenarios. You turn metrics into clear recommendations, helping executives make informed choices.
Additionally, we're looking for someone with most of the following:
Strong analytical background in management consulting or venture capital. Particular interest in candidates from firms known for rigorous financial modeling. Strong quantitative skills required.
Degree in Finance, Economics, Computer Science or related field.
Practical computer science or data science experience is helpful.
Proxies for high-curiosity, self-starters, students of the game mindsets.
